Canby Library celebration will focus on works of poet William Stafford

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Oregon poet William Stafford. The Canby Public Library will celebrate one of the most prolific and important poets of the last half century during the William Stafford centennial celebration Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Brian Doyle, a Stafford expert, will provide a glimpse into the life and work of Oregon’s most famous poet and writer.

Stafford spent most of his working life in Oregon after a Kansas boyhood. He called his plain-spoken poetry the record of a person thinking.

From 1975 to 1989 Stafford was the Oregon poet laureate. Centennial celebrations of Stafford’s life are planned all over Oregon throughout the year. The Oregon Library Association has dedicated the year 2014 to William Stafford with the intent to involve 80,000 Oregonians in communities and campuses throughout the state.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2:30 p.m. the public is invited to bring a poem of William Stafford’s to read aloud. Listeners are also invited.

Our youngest audience is invited to a special bilingual storytime with “Everyone Out Here Knows: A Big Foot Tale” by William Stafford on Friday, March 14, at 11 a.m.
