Health, wellness and a holiday meal

Ackerman Academy puts together all that for the community

Students at Canby’s Ackerman Academy presented a health and nutrition fair Nov. 14 in partnership with The Canby Center, serving more than 100 students and their families a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

The fair included nine health and wellness organizations from Clackamas County that offer resources for families and students, including Oregon Health Alliance, Restorative Justice, Oregon City Farmer’s Market, Providence and Safe Routes to School. The booths offered information and activities related to health and nutrition for visitors to the fair.

Students presented workshops on health related topics, such as smoking, drug use, sleep and stress. Another student led a yoga session for beginners and others helped explain school activities and events at an Ackerman-specific booth.

“Students were involved in every aspect of the event, from creating art to display to prepping the food,” said Ackerman Principal Noel Hygelund. “This evening represented our core values, which are to create a school that is student-centered, community-connected, and safe and inviting.”

Cutsforth’s Thriftway prepared and donated food for the event, Canby Christian Church donated items prepared by volunteers and Canby School District nutrition services staff.

Canby Kiwanis provided volunteers to serve and clean up the food with Canby High Key Clubbers in attendance as well.

Hygelund said that while Ackerman wanted to keep the event small this year, the school is looking forward to expanding the program annually and offering a resources and dinner for those in need throughout Canby.

“We were pleasantly surprised by the response of the community. Those who helped participate in the event were all willing to come back next year,” Ackerman teacher James Barr said. “We hope to grow the event to be an annual event that the larger Canby community can look forward to.”
