Soil workshop set for two days at NWREC
Aurora facility will have hands-on workshop
The Oregon State University Extension Service will offer a two-day hands-on soil workshop for small scale vegetable farmers at North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 13-14.
Registration fees are $50 per day or $90 for both days. Registration can be done online at smallfarms.oregonstate.edu/soilworkshop.
The workshop is for new and experienced vegetable farmers hoping to learn more about soil management.
The first day, Soil Types & Soil Structure will cover beginning topics including soil types, texture, structure, and organic matter.
Participants will have a chance to view soil horizons in the deep soil pit and observe a tillage demonstration.
The second day, Nutrient & Water Management includes more advanced topics including soil testing, soil moisture concepts, nitrogen management, and identifying nutrient deficiency symptoms. Participants will also learn how to use the OSU organic fertilizer and cover crop calculator.
