WWII quilt makes for a patchwork puzzle

by: RAY HUGHEY - Former Canby resident Sandy Monaco would like to find the family of the Word War II serviceman whose quilt she finished.Sandy Monaco found the quilt about 20 years ago at a garage sale just off Township Road.

“I’m thinking that was probably back around 1991,” she said. She lived in Canby from 1981 to 2007.

She was rummaging through the garage sale items and came across a box filled with fabric. It caught her interest and she asked about it.

“That’s something my uncle made when he was on a ship in World War II,” said the woman who was holding the sale.

How in the world? Monaco thought.

Friends and family sent him little bits of fabric in their letters, the woman explained. He used a postage stamp for his pattern.

He apparently cut the little squares and sewed them together, Monaco said.

It amazed her.

She took the quilt home in its box. She put it on a shelf, and it stayed there until just a few months ago.

Since she had started quilting herself, she decided to tackle the serviceman’s unfinished project.

She took it out and began piecing it together.

“He had put it all put together in large chunks,” she said. “He had all the hard parts done.”

It took her a couple of months. Then she had it quilted and did the binding herself.”

It was more than worth the effort.

“I love it,” Monaco said. “It really turned out nice.”

“When I got it done, I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing for the family to have it,’” she said.

She would want it if her uncle had made it, she said.

But she doesn’t know anything about the family or how to get in touch with them.

“I think they would find it a treasure,” she said.
