Make the most of your time in small-claims court

OC Library hosts program for first time in Clackamas County -

Jennifer Dalglish, the Clackamas County law librarian is dedicated to providing equal access to legal information and legal-research assistance to all citizens, so she is always looking for new and improved ways to do so.

When Laura Orr, the Washington County law librarian, created the small-claims presentation in Washington and Multnomah counties, she reached out and asked if Clackamas County like to host the program too.

Since Dalglish and Oregon City Library Director Maureen Cole had been talking about collaborating on a program for some time, they thought this was the perfect opportunity. Small-claims court is an especially interesting and relevant area of law for everyone – legal professionals and general citizens alike. Since attorneys rarely represent clients in small claims court, there is a great need for information in this area.

Law librarians and attorneys frequently get patrons with questions about small claims. The purpose of this presentation is to help empower citizens who have small claims disputes or clients with small-claims disputes with the legal information they need to access these options.

“We’ve expanded the presentation beyond the parameters of the Washington and Multnomah program (to view the video: http://vimeo.com/97363416) to include information on Justice Court and Resolution Services,” Dalglish said. “It seemed like a natural fit to provide information on these local alternatives to traditional small claims disputes. We’re very pleased and honored to have the Honorable Karen Brisbin speaking about Justice Court at this event. Justice Court is fairly new here in Clackamas County. In some situations, it can be a more cost-effective or time-effective option for small claims.”

Another natural addition to the speaker lineup was Erin Ruff, recommended by Clackamas County Resolution Services Director Lauren MacNeil. Resolution Services has a Small Claims Mediation Program.

“Mediation for resolving a small claims dispute can also be a more cost-effective or time-effective method, among other things,” Dalglish said. “Small claims procedures were created to provide a speedy, reasonably inexpensive and uncomplicated way for people to resolve certain claims.”

On Thursday, June 12, “Everything You Need to Know About Small Claims Court, Resolution Services and Justice Court” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oregon City Public Library, 606 John Adams St., partners with the Clackamas County Law Library for a free panel with Clackamas County judge Karen Brisbin; Janay Haas, author of “Using Small Claims Court in Oregon”; and Erin Ruff of Clackamas County Resolution Services.

Light refreshments will be provided.
