Suspended: Canby Fire District search for new fire chief put on hold

The board of directors for Canby Fire District 62 has halted its search for a new fire chief, pending a review of the selection process.

The board had narrowed the field to five finalists that it planned to introduce to the community at a public reception and interviews, Thursday and Friday.

Now that is off, at least temporarily.

Monday, board president Aaron Branum said, “In an effort to ensure that we’re complying with all laws regarding the hiring process, we’ve temporarily suspended our current hiring process.

The review of the process was prompted by a question from one of the candidates regarding public comments on the criteria, standards and policy directors for the hiring of a public officer, Branum said.

“We’re seeking advice from our legal counsel right now to ensure we’re following all the laws properly,” he said. “At such point we have a clear path forward, we will resume the process and continue from there.”

The search is to replace Chief Ted R. Kunze, who retires July 1 after 16 years as the district’s executive administrative officer.

The district board received 24 applications for the position, which pays a salary of $120,000 to $135,000.
