Canby Police hoping to clean out lost and found

by: RAY HUGHEY - Canby Police evidence technician Don Hemstreet keeps track of items in the department's property unit.Looking for a missing cellphone, that backpack that disappeared?

Don't be surprised if it turns up in the property room at the Canby Police Department.

Periodically, the police list found and recovered items on its website.

The items are listed under three categories -- Found bicycles, safekeeping property and found property.

And once an item is listed there, anyone suspecting it might be their property has 30 days to claim it, said Don Hemstreet, Canby Police Department evidence technician.

They have about 30 bicycles now, Hemstreet said. "It kind of varies through the seasons of the year. We get more in the summertime."

They have an expert look over the unclaimed bicycles, Hemstreet said.

Those with any value are donated to the Kiwanis Club of Canby. Those not worth so much are donated for parts to a local bicycle shop, which builds bicycles for kids.

Other items end up in the property room for safekeeping, he said. That includes property seized from a case or a traffic stop.

If the owner goes to jail, they can't take the property with them, Hemstreet said. "We keep it in our property room for safe keeping. It's up to them to claim it when they get out."

Found property includes items turned in or found around town, he said. That includes keys, wallets, knives, cellphones, backpacks and a fishing rod.

They even have a vacuum cleaner, and a set of golf clubs found in the street, Hemstreet said. Police also took in a large duffle bag containing stuffed animals and clothes.

Another found item in the property room is a handgun, which, if not claimed, will be destroyed, Hemstreet said.

Items of any value are auctioned off, but most are not and end up destroyed.

Unclaimed property in police possession is listed on the department website www.CanbyPolice.com on the found/unclaimed property links under News & Announcements.

Once it is listed, owners have 30 days to claim it. Those who think a listed item is theirs should call the police property room at 503-266-0761 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

They should be ready to provide a detailed description of the property, circumstances of its loss and proof of ownership as necessary. Positive identification is required before property will be released.
