Back in black

by: RAY HUGHEY - Cindy Carlson, of Woodburn, was in the Canby Fred Meyer parking lot at 3:30 a.m. Friday to be first in line when the store opened at 5 a.m.Black Friday dawned brightly with packed parking lots as shoppers lined up early for a fast start at their favorite retailers.

And things were no different in Canby where the Fred Meyer store opened at 5 a.m.

She and colleagues Julie Christ and Kelly Porter greeted shoppers at their table inside the store, offering doughnuts and beverages to the early and later arrivals.

Shopper Cindy Carlson was on the scene early. She is from Woodburn but grew up in Canby.

“I was sitting in the parking lot at 3:30 this morning,” she said. “The store opened at 5. I had to be sure I was first in line.

And she was, she said. “And I got the things I wanted.”

by: RAY HUGHEY - The sock bins at Fred Meyer were a popular target for Friday shoppers.She was still there at mid-morning, making her way up the lanes of cars packing the parking lot. Her latest armload of merchandise was for projects to keep her children busy, she said.

“My kids are in 4-H. I’m trying to get them to get their projects done before August. They’re off from school and they’re already driving me bonkers.”

Inside the store, Jim and Val Knodel relaxed on sofas in a recliner living room suite they were considering.

“We’re thinking about it,” Jim Knodel said. “You betcha. It’s got a good price on it.”

“I think she should buy it,” he said, “and she thinks I should buy it.”

“He’s trying to spend my money,” his wife said.
