Freeway crash claims life of Lyons man

A 26-year-old Lyons man died Monday when his car was crushed beneath a tractor-trailer in a multi-vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 5 just north of the Donald-Aurora interchange.

The victim was 26-year-old Dustin Paul Campbell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident, which happened about 5 p.m., closed the southbound lanes for four hours. Traffic had to use the inside shoulder to bypass the crash.

The Oregon State Police said Campbell was driving south in a 1991 Acura Integra in the right hand lane of the highway.

His car was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer rig driven by Gurpinder Singh, 27, of Red Bluff, Calif.

The truck rode over the top of the Acura and rear-ended a semi-trailer traveling in front of the Acura. The Acura was left crushed and pinned beneath the tractor of the truck driven by Singh.

It took some time before fire and medical responders could gain enough access to check the car’s passenger compartment.

Singh was taken to Oregon Health & Science University for treatment. His injuries were not life threatening.

A tow truck moved the vehicles off the freeway so the victim could be extricated.

The accident also closed the southbound off ramp to the Donald-Aurora area.

Personnel from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and the Aurora and Woodburn fire departments assisted the OSP.

ODOT personnel coordinated traffic flow and scene management.
