Fitting end to summer

The Kiss Summer Goodbye party is set for Saturday

Want to celebrate the passing of summer?

So does Canby. That’s why the Kiss Summer Goodbye party was developed by Canby Main Street’s Promotion Committee — to give people another reason to come downtown to celebrate all of the great things Canby has to offer.

Jamie Stickel, Main Street manager, has come up with a fun way for Canby to ring out the summer of 2013.“We were working on a slightly different event and it kind of morphed into this,” explained Jamie Stickel, Main Street manager. “We’d like to see this develop. Obviously, we want to create something that will get people to visit the downtown shops and enjoy the vendors.”

The inaugural event will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, from 4-8 p.m. in Wait Park.

There will be music — with dances by Allegro Dance Studio at 5 p.m., followed by the high school dance team at 5:30 p.m. The event is getting some help from CTV5, which is donating sound equipment to the event.

“We are really looking forward to holding a family-friendly event to ring out the end of the summer,” Stickel said. “We will have various vendors — face painters, arts and crafts, and food and we’re hopeful of having a beer garden.”

Main Street has been working with some of the Saturday Market vendors. Stickel is hopeful some of those will attend the event and that some other Canby businesses would be interested in being vendors for Kiss Summer Goodbye.

“We’d like to give those businesses (from Saturday Market) another reason to come to Canby,” Stickel said. “I think it’s really neat to provide people with the opportunity to come down and see what those folks have to offer. And like I said, any business owner here who wants to be a vendor, they can contact us and we’ll help them get started.”

In terms of music, Stickel said she is close to finalizing details with a popular local band, Dance Hall Daze. The group has appeared in Canby and in other venues around the area and offers a wide array of music influences to meet most tastes.

“We’re really excited to have them joining us,” Stickel said.
