  • Make friends with someone in your dorm that owns a car, you will need a ride for something important later in the year.
  • The four basic food groups are NOT Ramen, Mountain Dew, Pizza, and Cheesy Grillers. A balanced diet will keep your mind and body sharp and ready for the challenges at school.
  • 100/200 level classes can be harder than 300/400 level classes, so keep at it, it gets better and more interesting in your 3rd and 4th years!
  • Sleep is a poor substitute for caffeine. Actually, it’s the other way around but every now and then you need a boost to get all that studying and projects done.
  • Want high grades? Mark every quiz, test, project, paper, and final on a calendar, along with WHAT PERCENTAGE OF YOUR GRADE each is. When you have tests or assignments from different classes with similar due dates, study for the test or complete the assignment that means more to your grade first.
  • Buy a reliable computer and printer. Otherwise, one of them is sure to break down the night before your mid-term paper is due. And have Mom buy a couple extra ink cartridges when she gets you the industrial-sized laundry detergent that will last the whole year
  • Get involved! College is all about trying new things. I was a pre-dental Biology major but I had the chance to be involved with residence life, to DJ for two semesters, to play intramural sports, and to star in several plays.

    Use the right car seat or booster for your child based on their age, weight and height. There are three main types: rear-facing car seats for infants and toddlers, forward-facing car seats for toddlers and preschoolers, and booster seats for children ages 8 to 12 years.

    Always keep kids 12 and younger in the back seat. The powerful force of an air bag deploying can cause serious injury and may even be fatal for children.

    Buy your car seats new or from a trusted source. If you can't verify a car seat's full past, including the expiration date and accident history, don't get it.

    Get your car seat inspected by a professional. Improper use or installation of a car seat can put your child's safety at risk, and it's more common than you might think.

    Set a good example for your children. Always keep your own seat belt safely fastened.

    In addition to these guidelines, all 50 states have child safety seat laws with different requirements and penalties. Make sure you're following your state's laws and keeping your child as safe and secure as possible when riding in the car.

  • Exercise EVERY DAY, even if it’s just a brisk walk. 1 mile of walking can burn 150 calories!
  • Hydrate before you attend an outing and you won’t crave salty junk food. If you can bring extra water, do it.
  • Eat a healthy meal BEFORE you go. You’ll save in dollars AND in calories.
  • Many festivals have a BBQ dinner tied to a fundraiser—anything served there is better than carnie cart food.
  • No deep fried ANYTHING at your outing. Burritos, soba noodles, veggies and chicken, even baked potatoes are good alternatives to fried food.
  • Beer and wine are expensive at festivals; limit your consumption to no more than 2 alcoholic beverages, and mix a bottle of water in between alcoholic beverages. When you get home, take a shower and drink another glass of water. You will save on calories, sleep better, and be better able to stay on top of your fitness goals moving forward.
  • Get extra rest the night before. Rest lowers your cortisol levels, making it less likely you’ll binge on bad food.
  • Get out and enjoy the festivals and outings but follow the Club Fit festival survival guide; you’ll keep your fitness goals right on track.

    CANBY CLINIC - Dr. Erin WalkerFlu outbreaks can happen as early as October and as late as May, but they usually peak between December and February. When you first feel yourself becoming sick there are things you can do to avoid becoming ill or to shorten the duration of illness. These suggestions are especially helpful if you do them early on – as early as possible to boost your immunity. They will help you fend off the flu, colds, or minor infections. 

    Eat Very Lightly or Take out the "Bad Stuff" -- With most illnesses the appetite is diminished, this is a natural response of the body. Energy is needed to fight off the “bug” and the body doesn’t have the energy to process food. Give your digestive tract a rest! Take out foods that are inflammatory, high in sugar, bad fats, or that contain simple carbs. Don’t just eat to eat, believe it or not, but sometimes your body does need a break from meals!

    Get Rest as Soon as Possible -- Many people ignore the early warning signs of illness and keep on working until they “drop.” You will take longer to heal if you allow the illness to get a foothold. If you feel a sore throat, headache, congestion, etc., coming on, take it easy. If possible, take a day off from work. This may prevent you from having to take three days later on.

    Drink Plenty of Fluids -- Drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day! You can clear the toxins from a “bug” out of your system with large amounts of filtered water and herbal teas.

    Take Immunity-Boosting Supplements and Homeopathics

    Vitamin C:  Take 1,000 mg every 3-4 hours with a small amount of food.  Cut back on dosage if stools become loose.

    Vitamin A: Take 10,000 IU three times daily. (Women who are pregnant should not take high doses of Vitamin A as it can have adverse effects on the fetus.

    Zinc: Take 30-50 mg once daily with a small amount of food. This can be continued for 1-2 weeks without depleting copper stores in the body.

    Oscillococcinum: Take 6 pellets of this homeopathic remedy every 6 hours at the first onset of flu or cold symptoms. Take away from food.

    Take Immunity-Enhancing Herbs* – These herbs can be taken as teas (3-5 cups/day), tinctures or syrups (30 drops 4 times a day), or in freeze-fried capsules (2 capsules 4 times a day).       Echinacea (Purple Cone Flower)                                              Hydrastis (Goldenseal)       Commiphora Myrrha (Myrrh)                                                     Trifolium (Red Clover)       Ligusticum (Osha)                                                                     Elderberry (best in syrup form) *These are adult dosages.     Give Yourself a Home Hydrotherapy Treatment (A Hot Foot Bath)– Soak feet in hot water while wrapped in a warm wool blanket. Put a cold cloth on your head and relax while you sit in a comfortable position for 10-15 minutes. Take care to avoid getting chilled after this treatment. Or...

    Throat or Chest Compress– Warm the throat or chest with a warm washcloth or hot shower. Dry the skin thoroughly and apply a thin cotton wrap (to throat) or a thin cotton T-shirt (to chest) that has been soaked in cold water and wrung out so that it is not dripping wet. Cover this with a wool scarf (throat) or a wool sweater (chest). Go to bed this way. By morning the scarf or T-shirt will be dry. This treatment increases circulation and increases white blood cell activity.

    Do not consume foods that don't nourish your body. These include foods that have high sugar content, too little protein, overuse of junk food/preservatives, and that include known food sensitivities.

Recently there have been several studies on the health benefits from coffee including a reduced risk of various cancers, Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and depression.  The beneficial effects from coffee are from the antioxidants from both the caffeine and the polyphenols.  Coffee also has a role in reducing inflammation, which is at the heart of most chronic disease

    There is of course, the dark side to coffee as well.  Caffeine can have adverse effects on health including raising blood pressure, increasing cholesterol, irritating the stomach, worsening fibrocystic breast syndrome, and causing anxiety.  I would recommend avoiding coffee if you are exhausted, because it can further tire out your adrenal system.  Another issue around coffee to consider is mold and pesticides.  Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed foods and mold has been present in up to 30% of the coffee on the market.  To minimize the mold and pesticides in your coffee, freshly grind the beans, and use higher quality organic coffee.

    We’ve been hearing this advice our whole life. Yet so few actually follow it. One-third of Americans don’t brush twice a day. Half of Americans never floss. And a third don’t visit the dentist at all.

    Taking care of your teeth for just 5 minutes per day and visiting the dentist regularly can reduce chance of heart disease, infections and even dementia — as well as issues with our teeth and gums.

    Brush twice a day and floss daily:

    To remove plaque, a whitish substance that coats the teeth. It contains bacteria that can cause major health problems in your mouth as well as throughout your body, from your lungs to your heart to your brain.

    To prevent cavities. The bacteria in plaque converts sugars from the food you eat into acid plaque, which softens tooth enamel and causes holes in the teeth.

    Visit the dentist twice per year:

    To remove tartar. Plaque can harden on teeth and under the gum line to form tartar. Tartar and bacteria can make your gums swell and bleed (a condition called gingivitis).  This can progress into advanced gum disease and eventual tooth loss. Tartar can only be removed with a dental cleaning by a dental hygienist.
