Wildcats handle Gresham, pick up third straight win
Westview scores three touchdowns in the third quarter to pull away from the Gophers
GRESHAM Westview was ready to regain the lead when Jack England lined up for a 33-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter. The kick was blocked, but it wouldnt be long before the Wildcats got the lead they were searching for.
Gresham running back Sirgio Hoffman had already scored in the first quarter and was breaking free again, cutting through the middle of the field at full speed. But his journey ended unexpectedly when Westview linebacker Trevor Bovero reached in from the side and ripped the ball out.
The Wildcats recovered the fumble and took possession in Greshams end of the field. Westview QB Austin Brisbee converted the turnover into points when he threw an 18-yard dart to Mitch Kekel, who was left all alone down the middle of the field.
A 10-yard catch by Jacob Sturtevant on 3rd-and-4, set up the scoring play.
The Gophers tried to answer on their next possession, moving the ball inside the Wildcats 30-yard-line.
But Westviews D answered the challenge.
Lineman Noah Spencer broke through quickly and forced a rushed throw third-down by Gresham QB Devon Shields, which fell incomplete after making it only halfway to its intended target.
Shields would complete his next pass on 4th-and-7, finding Maleko Arango on a slant pattern over the middle. But he was hit immediately by Westviews Matt Allee and stopped three yards short of the marker.
The Wildcats showcased their quick-strike offense late in the half, travelling 55 yards in less than a minute, ending with Bovero bulldozing 5 yards through the middle for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead.
Jacob Short set up the scoring play when he caught a short pass, dodged a tackle and cut across the middle for a 42-yard pick up.
Gresham answered in one play when Hoffman broke free for a 76-yard TD run, cutting Westviews lead to 21-14 at the half.
But the Wildcats put the game away by finding the end zone three times in the third quarter, rebuilding a double-digit margin after Bovero second TD run of the night.
The Wildcats have won three straight, heading into this weeks Metro League opener at Aloha.
