Southridge High went into halftime with the score tied 14-14 at Tualatin High.

A rousing halftime speech from coach Doug Dean lit a fire under the Skyhawks, though. Southridge exploded offensively in the second half and went on to turn the game into a 35-14 blowout.

“The first half we were slacking, and coach sort of chewed us in the locker room,” Skyhawks running back Devin Martinez said. “We responded with what he wanted us to do.”

On the first play of the game, Southridge recovered a fumble on the Tualatin 20-yard-line. Two plays later, running back Jake Pruit running out of Southridge’s “Wildhawk” formation took a keeper around the right side for a nine-yard touchdown.

“It was just great blocking,” Pruit said. “Our line really made a hole. The fake really got them out of the way so I could do the easy part and get it into the end zone.”

On their next possession, the Timberwolves moved the ball down to the 4-yard-line. Tualatin could not punch the ball into the end zone, though, and then missed a 28-yard field goal.

Tualatin tied the score 7-7 with 11:25 remaining in the second quarter.

Facing a fourth down with the ball on the Southridge 25-yard-line, quarterback Brandon Shroyer dropped back and found running back Ryan Wisner open in the corner of the end zone. Shroyer threw a perfect pass, and Wisner made an over-the-shoulder catch.

The Timberwolves then went up 14-7 with 8:08 remaining in the half. Facing another fourth down, this time from the 22-yard-line, Tualatin dialed up the same play. Once again, Shroyer found Wisner in the end zone.

Shroyer finished 15 of 26 passing for 216 yards and two TDs. Wisner caught three passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. “It was a distraction, they bit on it, wide hole up the middle ,and I just did my job,” Pruit said.

Pruit finished the night with 14 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

As a team, Southridge ran for a whopping 333 yards on the ground and held a normally run-heavy Tualatin squad to just 15 rushing yards. The Skyhawks had 10 total tackles for a loss defensively with Pepe Tanuvasa and Tyler Saunders both coming up big with two-and-half tackles for a loss apiece. Nick Young and Nathan Buell each notched a tackle for a loss as did Michael Parks. Saunders, Tanuvasa and Young also had a sack.

Things changed dramatically in the second half. The Southridge defense stiffened, and the Skyhawks offense got a shot of turbo-boost. With 9:12 remaining in the third quarter, Martinez scored on a 10-yard-touchdown run to make the score 21-14.

“Coach asked me to keep both hands on the ball and told me to run hard,” Martinez said. “That’s what I did.”

Martinez then had the biggest play of the night with 6:09 remaining in the quarter. “I’d have to give that all to the line,” Martinez said. “I asked them to give me a hole, and that’s what they did.”

Martinez ended his night with 13 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

The Skyhawks tacked on one more insurance touchdown with 7:34 remaining in the fourth quarter. Quarterback AJ Woodin found a wide open Jacob Gomez, who made the catch and got into the end zone for a 13-yard TD.

This week Southridge will travel to Centennial High.

“We’ve just got to keep going,” Martinez said.
