The Washington County Cooperative Library Services recently announced Sunset High School freshman Jacqueline Brown as the winner of its 2014 Teen Summer Reading Art Contest.

Brown was awarded top honors for her “unique and electrifying design, which depicts a reader poring over the wondrous contents of a book,” says Jodi Nielsen, senior program educator. “Her design expertly captures this year’s Teen Summer Reading theme, ‘Spark a Reaction.’”

This is the fifth consecutive year the cooperative has encouraged teens to capture the spirit of summer reading through their creative art.

A total of 35 pieces were submitted at the public libraries in Washington County during the months of January and February. In early March, a panel of teen librarians met to review feedback collected from local Teen Library Councils and select the winning piece.

Southridge High School’s Katie Fo took second place in the contest, and Rebecca Dan of Glencoe High School earned an honorable mention. Both were given a gift card for Dick Blick Art Materials.

The Summer Reading Program inspires kids with a sense of wonder and helps to promote good learning habits. The program begins on June 1, when teens will be invited to sign up at their local library to earn prizes for reading, including tickets to Portland Thorn and Trail Blazers games, a round of miniature golf at Bullwinkle’s Family Fun Center, a coupon for one free open swim session at a Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District pool and a discount ride bracelet for a day full of activities at Oaks Amusement Park.
