No trick, just treats at Mask & Mirror debut

Tigard theater company hands out goodies, promotes new musical

On Halloween, members of the company’s newest production will be in costume handing out candy to youngsters as well as selling tickets for their new musical melodrama, “No, No, A Million Times No (or Only a Farmer’s Daughter),” which debuts next month.

The actors will be handing out candy during Tigard’s annual Trick or Treat on Main Street event, which offers a fun, safe place for young children to trick-or-treat in the city.

For every adult ticket purchased during the event, families will receive two free children’s tickets.

“No, No” is the most family-friendly production the troupe has put on yet, said Gary Romans, the group’s co-founder.

Directed by Sandy Libonati, who also penned Mask & Mirror’s successful Robin Hood musical two years ago and last year’s “A Christmas Carol,” the play takes place on a farm where a young woman has returned to the safety after near-ruin in the big city, but she is pursued by a villain who hopes to exploit her and take over the family farm.

The play is a melodrama, said actor John Bartholomew, who plays farmer Pappy Quackenbush, which means everything needs to be exaggerated.

“Melodrama characters are bigger than life,” Bartholomew said. “(They are) more emotional, and more physical. The end result is a more rewarding performance for everyone, both cast and audience. And we’re even singing and dancing in this production, too.”

Actress Sarah Thornton agreed.

“It has been quite a while since I have had the chance to delve into the world of melodrama,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed breaking out of my usual theater comfort zone to bring out the over-exaggerated emotions and movements of my character.”

It takes more than 20 local actors, singers, dancers and crew members to put on the production, often taking on more than one role.

Nick Hamilton, who portrays the play’s protagonist, Noble Hart, also serves backstage as the production’s technical director.

“It’s a lot of work,” he said. “But it makes it easier, because I can see it from both perspectives: As an actor and crew, and use one to inform the other. I get instant feedback on what’s working and what needs fixing.”

The production opens Friday, Nov. 8, for nine performances at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 10445 S.W. Canterbury Lane, in Tigard.

Tigard's Trick or Treat on Main Street begins at 4 p.m.

This year’s Trick or Treat on Main Street event is getting started a little later than usual.

Ghosts and monsters looking for candy will have to wait until 4 p.m. to start trick or treating at Main Street businesses.

The annual event invites families from across the area to trick or treat at participating Tigard businesses.

The change is meant to help parents and children, said Dianna Weston, who manages downtown events. Youngsters will have a bit more time to get home from school and change into their costumes before heading downtown.

The event wraps up at about 6 p.m.

Tigard Police will be helping coordinate traffic during the event.

Participating businesses will fly an orange balloon.
