Community members invited to Arbor Day tree-planting event on Saturday

Beaverton to be recognized as Tree City USA for 20th year

The city of Beaverton and Friends of Trees will host a tree planting ceremony and Arbor Day celebration on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Southwest Barrows Road at 157th Avenue.

The Oregon Department of Forestry will recognize Beaverton as a "Tree City USA" for the 20th year and present Mayor Denny Doyle and the City Council with a Tree City USA flag, plaque and community signs.

Following the ceremony, community members will help plant 40 native trees, including 16 Douglas firs, 15 Western red cedars, six Pacific dogwoods and three Oregon white oaks.

This is the eighth year the city has partnered with Friends of Trees to celebrate Arbor Day, which first established the national tradition of community tree planting on April 10, 1872.

Tree City USA communities must meet four requirements, including having a designated tree board, providing a forestry professional or city department that cares for trees, maintaining a tree-care ordinance and an active forestry program and hosting an Arbor Day celebration.

Other factors include regular tree planting, tree preservation, disease management and pruning.

“The Arbor Day Celebration is another example of community coming together to enhance the livability of Beaverton,” Doyle said. “During this year’s celebration, volunteers will help transform an unkempt lot into a place of beauty.”

Beaverton is one of the few cities in Oregon that maintains a full-time tree maintenance program. There are more than 28,700 street trees in Beaverton and 6,564 on city-owned property. New trees are added each year to enhance the quality of neighborhoods.

Additional volunteers are needed for the event. To donate time or would like more information, please contact Pat Hoff, the city’s lead arborist, at 503-526-2237.

Refreshments will be provided. In honor of Arbor Day, volunteers will be given native plants at the end of the event.
