Health and Science School receives $353,630 grant

Career Technical Education Revitalization Grant is aimed at doubling student internships

The Beaverton School District’s Health and Science School has received a $353,630 Career Technical Education Revitalization Grant. Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Rob Saxton made the announcement Tuesday.

The state award is expected to help the school — which caters to students in the sixth through 12th grades, many of whom are interested in engineering or careers in medicine — develop and support programs that will double internships available to students.

In addition, the money will:

  • Help fund summer bridge programs for at-risk students district-wide as they transition to high school and college.

  • Pay for the creation of industry-quality videos of student profiles in the Career Technical Education program and in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (or STEM) programs.

  • Allow the Health and Science School to expand its Career Technical Education programming into the middle and high school levels in the biomedical sciences and engineering fields.

Business and community partners working with Health and Science School include the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America STEM Explorers, CMD Marketing, Intel Corp., Kaiser Permanente Westside Hospital, the Oregon Department of Transportation, Portland Metro STEM Partnership, Project Lead the Way and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.

“HS2 and the Beaverton School District look forward to our continued collaborative efforts with these committed partners,” said Steve Day, Health and Science School principal.

The Oregon Legislature established the Career Technical Education Revitalization Grant in an effort to benefit students, schools and local employers in Oregon in health care, manufacturing, construction and other fields. An estimated 90,000 Oregon middle and high school students will receive CTE Revitalization Grants totaling $8.87 million.
