Do you know someone who would be a good deputy?
Washington County Sheriff's Office seeks job applicants
The Washington County Sheriff's Office will begin accepting deputy applications on Saturday, Oct. 5.
"We are asking for the public's help in finding the best possible applicants for entry-level patrol and jail deputy positions," said Sgt. Bob Ray, sheriff's office spokesman.
Sheriff Pat Garrett believes some of the best deputy candidates may go undetected and is asking citizens to look around them and encourage people who they believe would make a good deputy to apply.
"If you call 911 or have a neighbor dispute, what type of person do you want to respond," Ray asked.
The sheriff's office employs 240 law enforcement deputies and 138 jail deputies, along with 161 civilians and has a goal to hire staff who represent the demographics of the communities it serves.
"While the sheriff's office will always hire the best candidates identified through our rigorous selection process, we are also mindful of the important contributions female deputies have made in patrol," said Undersheriff Jeff Mori. "While men are commonly drawn to this line of work, we want to be sure women are also considering police work among their potential career or second career choices."
Toward that end, the agency is making female and male deputies available in the community on three occasions to talk about their work, what they enjoy and find challenging, and describe what attracted them to the profession.
If you know someone who might make a great deputy, encourage them to attend one of these events from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
Tuesday, Oct. 1, Sheriff's Office Bethany Substation, 4744 N.W. Bethany Blvd.
Thursday, Oct. 3, Ava Roasteria, 15135 S.W. Barrows Road, Unit 137, at Progress Ridge.
Monday, Oct. 7, Peets Coffee, Bridgeport Village, 7471 S.W. Bridgeport Road, Unit G, in Tigard.
The sheriff's office is also hosting a Recruitment Fair on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Hillsboro Headquarters, 215 S.W. Adams Ave.
